Blocked Telephone Numbers
All 900 numbers, as well as local 741 telephone numbers, are automatically blocked from all UAB telephone numbers.

Amplified Handsets
Amplified handsets are available for those persons with hearing difficulties. Departments are responsible for purchasing these specialized handsets, but the amplified handsets are provided to patients free of charge. Departments may contact the Telecommunication Services Applications Department at 4-0503 for details, and patients need to notify the Nursing Unit or Guest Services (4-2273) of their need for an amplified handset.

Authorization Codes
Authorization codes are available for individuals within departments needing to place long distance calls on restricted telephone lines. These, authorization codes are specific to a telephone number. Authorization codes are also used as an alternate billing method (i.e., your lines are charged to your department, but you have calls which should be charged to a grant.) To inquire about authorization codes, please contact the Telecommunication Services Business Office at 5-3605.
To make calls with an authorization code, use one of the following methods.

  • NOTE: Press "#" immediately after entering authorization code. This allows you to continue dialing without a wait.
  • Local
    Dial 3 + authorization code"#" + 9 + 7-digit number
  • Long Distance
    Dial 3 + authorization code"#" + 9 + 1 + area code + 7-digit number
  • International

Calling Card/Operator-Assisted Calls
Personal phone calls may be charged to calling cards by using the code assigned from the long distance carrier providing the card. There are several methods available:

  • 9 + 0 + area code + 7-digit number. When you hear a tone, enter the calling card number, or wait on the line for the operator to assist you. NOTE: Presently, these calls go through our EarthLink carrier. The resulting rate has been negotiated to be the lowest available. SPECIAL NOTE: This method does not apply to AT&T proprietary cards (cards beginning with the digit 8).
  • 14 + 0 + area code + 7-digit number. When you hear a tone, enter the calling card number, or wait on the line for the AT&T operator to assist you.
  • 14 + 00 if you need assistance from an AT&T operator.

Cellular Telephones
If you are always on the go, but need to stay in touch with your office and associates, you may be interested in a cellular telephone. Due to the costs of this equipment, the university has developed a policy. The policy requires that a "Cellular Telephone Approval Form" be signed by the appropriate vice president in order to have this equipment charged to your departmental account. Just call the Telecommunication Services Business Office at 4-1527 for the approval form and details. We will gladly assist you with your selection, purchase, and training.

Conference Unit
A teleconferencing unit is available for use from the Telecommunication Services Applications Department. This unit provides quality multi-party conversation from your office, or conference room. The only requirement is a modular jack and an analog telephone line (i.e., a single line telephone line, facsimile machine line, modem line, etc.) at your location. This unit requires an advance reservation, but the use of the unit itself is free. Reservations can be made through our Service Request Page.

Data/Network Connectivity
UAB Telecommunications Services is responsible for all network wiring for departmental LANs and/or campus network connections. For details, contact the Telecommunications Applications Department at 4-0503.

Hands-Free Telephone

This unit allows you to answer an incoming call or carry on a conversation through a microphone and an exterior speaker without lifting the handset. The type of hands-free telephone available, as well as the applicable costs, will depend upon your telephone system. The Telecommunication Services Applications Department at 4-0503 will assist you.
