WHEREAS, a generous gift of $25,000 has been made by Foundry Networks,
Incorporated for the purpose of establishing an endowed scholarship in honor of
the late Joyce Iannuzzi at The University of Alabama at Birmingham; and
WHEREAS, it is the wish of all who knew and loved Joyce that this endowed
scholarship serve as a permanent and meaningful way to honor her memory; and
WHEREAS, Joyce W. Iannuzzi, daughter of William Eugene Walker and the former
Corine Stallings, was born in a farmhouse near York, Alabama, on February 5,
1939;
WHEREAS, she lived much of her early life in rural Alabama, but her family
eventually moved to Enterprise, Mississippi where she graduated valedictorian
of Enterprise High School in 1957; and
WHEREAS, Joyce received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from
William Carey College in 1961; and
WHEREAS, it was while attending William Carey College that she met her husband,
Francesco Iannuzzi, a young immigrant from the southern region of Italy; and
WHEREAS, Joyce and Francesco married on December 22, 1962, in Birmingham,
Alabama and their only son, Frank Anthony, was born the following year; and
WHEREAS, Joyce's lifelong affiliation with computer-related work began in 1965,
when she joined the staff of Arnold Engineering Development Center as a
Mathematics Data Aid, and by 1970 had earned the distinction of becoming the
first female engineer at Arnold; and
WHEREAS, it was in 1975 that Joyce began her dedicated career at The University
of Alabama at Birmingham, serving as customer support, advocate, and champion
for thousands of students, faculty and staff; and
WHEREAS, she served as a computer programmer at UAB from 1975 until 1986 and as
Manager of User Services in UAB Communications from 1986 until the day of her
unexpected death on May 7, 2003; and
WHEREAS, her expertise at UAB was in the definition and implementation of
computer-related disciplines and networking requirements, as they relate to the
functionality of a university; and
WHEREAS, as a testament to her devotion to UAB, it was not uncommon for Joyce to
stay at work as long as it took to fix the problem, even if it meant remaining
at work for 24 hours or more; and
WHEREAS, Joyce left an indelible mark in the field of computer science and
utilization at UAB, devising, implementing and managing the computer network
that allows communication among UAB employees, departments and the world; and
WHEREAS, most importantly, Joyce Iannuzzi is remembered by all of those who knew
her and loved her as a caring and compassionate individual who was immensely
devoted to her profession and to her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, during the course of her tenure at UAB, Mrs. Iannuzzi was instrumental
in developing a relationship between UAB and Foundry Networks, Incorporated, a
relationship that grew and flourished over the years; and
WHEREAS, Foundry Networks, Incorporated is a high performance and total
solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing and Web traffic
management; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of Foundry Networks, Inc. that this gift be used to
establish an endowed scholarship in memory of Joyce W. Iannuzzi to perpetuate
her life and legacy and to be used to create unique and lasting support to the
deserving students whose lives and careers will be influenced by its receipt;
and
WHEREAS, this gift will have a positive impact on the lives and careers of the
students who benefit from it, and therefore, to the University;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by The Board of Trustees of The University of
Alabama that it hereby recognizes the years of service Mrs. Joyce W. Iannuzzi
dedicated to The University of Alabama at Birmingham and that it herewith
expresses its gratitude for the generous gift made by Foundry Networks, Inc. in
her memory.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Board hereby establishes the Joyce Iannuzzi
Endowed Scholarship for Computer Science and Technology as a pure endowment of
the University;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be so read upon the permanent
minutes of this Board, and that copies be sent to Dr. Francesco Iannuzzi to
share with members of his family; to Sheila M. Sanders, Interim Vice President
for Information Technology and Director of UAB Communications; and to other
appropriate officials of The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
