The headstone on Joyce's grave reads, "Joyce, superior intellect, profound wisdom, iron will, and never ending love for all!" Although stricken in childhood by a fever that damaged her optical nerve and left her with blurred vision, Joyce used this cloudiness as a filter to see things that ordinary people do not see. She learned to discern the minute details and to judge situations with a keen sense of objectivity that made many powerful decision-makers seek out her counsel. Joyce could see the future like no one of us can see--predicting, estimating correctly, trends and outcomes very far down the road. In this capacity, she was able to contribute immensely to the growth of UAB throughout the years. Defeat was not possible with Joyce. Her iron will supported her throughout any endeavor she undertook. She often said, "If it takes more than 24 hours a day and more than 7 days a week, we must persevere until the task is accomplished." Joyce's superior intellect was recognized by most of her peers and superiors. The biggest testament to this genius came from Dr. James Kirklin, who included Joyce in the team that spearheaded the formation of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation and the Kirklin Clinic. As part of this team, Joyce helped to select the key systems that are still in place today. Dr. Kirklin often told Joyce that he did not understand how such a disjointed group of people could work so well together and accomplish so much. But those who knew her best know that her secret was love. It was her never ending love for all that made the unmanageable, manageable; the cantankerous, happy; the disjointed, cohesive; the inefficient, efficient; and the impossible, possible.
