JOYCE IANNUZZI SCHOLARSHIP REACHES PRESIDENTIAL STATUS
“By increasing the support of the Joyce Iannuzzi Endowed
Scholarship for Computer Science and Technology to the presidential status
level, the family, friends, and colleagues of Mrs. Iannuzzi have ensured a
lasting memory in her honor as well as provided the opportunity for additional
students to achieve their goals,” says Lowell Wenger, Ph.D., dean of the School
of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
A pioneer in engineering and computer science, Joyce
Iannuzzi came to UAB in 1975. She served for more than 20 years as a customer
support advocate and champion for thousands of students, faculty, and staff,
first as a computer programmer and later as manager of User Services, until her
unexpected death in May 2003. The scholarship that was established in her name
in 2003 has been renamed the Joyce Iannuzzi Endowed Presidential Scholarship in
Computer Science and Technology. A scholarship of this status is one of the
most significant and substantial given at UAB.
“We are particularly grateful for this scholarship support
as we can build upon the successes of the computer and information sciences
department and attract even more qualified and talented students into the
program,” Wenger adds.
“Joyce always loved UAB, and she loved to see students
prosper from their education there,” Francesco Iannuzzi, Ph.D., says of his
late wife. “She came from a modest beginning to achieve many things for UAB and
its students. I know she would be proud that the scholarship has reached
presidential level because it will continue to assist many students for years
to come in achieving their dreams.”
